I don't think I would surprise you if I told you that blue is the most popular colour chosen by our brides. On our full collection page you can now filter every design to see only those in blue and further refine this if you are looking for a blue silk garter or a blue velvet garter for example. When you spend all day looking at garters you begin to wonder about all the traditions, where does this 'something blue' idea come from for example?!
A 'something blue' is simply a traditional good luck charm, one of five from the rhyme 'something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in her shoe'. The origins of the rhyme are lost now but it's safe to say it's very old - it is referenced as an 'ancient custom' in a book published in 1876 - and English of origin. The book that references the rhyme for the first time, Notes & Queries (Oxford) is incredibly still published today after first appearing in 1849, extraordinary!
Something old represents continuity; something new offers optimism for the future; something borrowed symbolises borrowed happiness; something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity; and a sixpence in your shoe is a wish for good fortune and prosperity.
Whether you choose to adopt some or all of the traditions and ancient customs that have woven themselves around weddings over the millennia the only truly important things on your wedding day are to feel great and have fun - something blue or not!
